Getting Maximum Investment From Your Office Space
All investments need to be maxed out – that is one of the rules that small businesses of all kinds need to live by in order to succeed and thrive in today's competitive business environment.
When it comes to production or customer care, every serious entrepreneur knows what to do. Intriguingly, however, many other departments do not get as much attention as they should in all honesty – and office space is definitely among them. The thing is, there is no reason why it should stay away from a closer look. After all, office space is something that takes a lot of money out of the business, so why should not we try to max out that investment and get as much return as we can get for our hard-earned cash?

Using Space Effectively
First of all, use your common sense when considering what layout you are going to go for. From my personal experience, it is something that start-ups and small businesses sometimes do fairly poorly. Among the worst performances that I have seen so far was one company that somehow managed to set up two closely-related departments so far away from each other that some of the company's employees had to walk across the entire building a couple of times a day. It sounds stupid – and it is, so don't mess things up in a similar manner!
The ideal way to save space is to sit down with your closest employees and figure out what would be the best for the daily operations of your business. A good layout can save you plenty of time, frustration and, most importantly, space. The space you can save by making things more effective can then naturally be used for other uses – temporary storage facilities, conference rooms, and perhaps even some space for relaxation (yes, that does not have to be an option available only for the top companies!).
Using Office Space for Marketing
Finding new uses for something you already own is yet another way for finding additional value. Have you ever thought about using your office space as a marketing tool? Perhaps not – but it can be done. For example, try to negotiate the possibility of having your logo and/or other brand symbols outside the building, ideally on its façade. Sometimes, you might not get a permission to do that, but it is something that is slowly becoming a standard these days, so don't be afraid to ask.
The best thing is that it really works – a strategically placed logo will get you in the spotlight a bit more and, if somebody will want to find the right building in an otherwise bland-looking location, you can be sure that he is going to succeed.

Office Space as a Meeting Place
With marketing already mentioned, perhaps we could go a bit further and use the company's office space as the number one meeting place for the businesses. We are not talking about getting a conference room – that is something that you have probably already thought through and perhaps even implemented. We are talking about using one of your spare rooms or conference rooms as a meeting place for your customers.
Yes – it certainly isn't the best place. However, if you have to run on a shoe-string budget, it is very doubtful that you will lose any customers just because you have invited them to your comfortable and stylish meeting room.
If you are an owner of a start-up or a small business, you simply have to get as much as you can from all your investments, no matter how unimportant they might look at first glance. Re-thinking the concept of office space can get you some additional value for your initial investment, regardless of whether you will decide to go for the ideas that have been mentioned in this article or whether you will go for some of your own ideas. The bottom line is that you should not be afraid to try new things – the fact that others are not doing their best to maximize their potential does not mean that you should stay away from these intriguing options as well!
